Minimize Varicose Veins | Encino Vein Doctor | Aluna Vein Centers

As a Southern California vein specialist who provides cosmetic, laser and vein treatment in Encino, Beverly Hills, Irvine & Glendale, Dr. Massoudi has successfully completed thousands of varicose vein procedures. While anyone can be affected by varicose veins, pregnant women are especially prone to developing these raised, swollen veins that bulge near the surface of the skin. These unsightly blue or purple and sometimes squiggly veins are most likely to show up on the legs, although they can also appear elsewhere on the lower body.

Why Women Get Varicose Veins When Pregnant

During pregnancy, the blood volume increases as the uterus grows. This puts pressure on the large inferior vena cava vein on the right side of the body, which in turn increases pressure in the leg veins. This increased pressure makes it more difficult for the blood from the legs to return back to the heart. All these things, when combined, make the veins in the legs more likely to become swollen, uncomfortable and discolored.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

In addition to not looking good, varicose veins can cause:

  • Itching, burning, tingling and general discomfort
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Heavy, aching or cramping legs
  • Numbness
  • Restlessness

Tips for Minimizing Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

While it is difficult to entirely prevent varicose veins from developing while pregnant, there are some things you can do to minimize varicose veins during pregnancy including:

  • Get daily exercise to help with circulation
  • Avoid standing or sitting still for long periods of time
  • Strive to keep within the recommended weight range for your stage of pregnancy
  • Don’t cross your legs or ankles when sitting
  • Elevate your feet and legs whenever possible
  • Wear maternity support hose designed to add gradual amounts of gentle pressure to the legs
  • Sleep on your left side, with your feet elevated to decrease pressure on the veins in your legs and feet

When To See an Encino Vein Specialist

While varicose veins may cause discomfort and be unsightly, the good news is that these veins will usually disappear once the baby has arrived and improve around three or four months after birth. If you still have varicose veins after this time, you should see a varicose vein doctor for treatment.
