What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are bulging, twisted, enlarged veins that are clearly visible in the skin. They normally form in the legs and feet, and they stem from an underlying condition called chronic venous insufficiency, or CVI. CVI develops when the valves inside a vein don’t function properly, causing blood to pool in the vein and the vein to then swell. Varicose veins are closely related to spider veins, another symptom of CVI.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

In general, varicose veins are caused by chronic venous insufficiency. At a functional level, they occur when valves within the veins don’t close properly, allowing blood to flow backward in a condition called “venous reflux.” This backward flow puts pressure on the vein, causing it to expand and leading to visible spider and varicose veins. Catching them early can make your varicose vein treatment as effective as possible.
Varicose veins can have a variety of causes, which range from obesity or sedentary lifestyles to factors as basic as genetics or aging. It’s difficult to predict who will get varicose veins, which is why it’s important to schedule an appointment with your Aluna Vein Center vein removal specialists if you think you might be getting spider or varicose veins. Feel free to contact us at our Beverly Hills, Glendale, or Encino offices if you notice this happening to your body.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can cause problems in the flow of blood through the legs, thus preventing skin and leg tissues from getting the proper amount of oxygen. This can cause a wide range of symptoms affecting both the skin and legs as a whole. The most obvious symptoms are the bulging, visible veins that characterize varicose veins, but symptoms can also include things like:
  • Swollen legs
  • Pain or cramping
  • Dermatitis
  • Changes in the color or texture of skin
  • Strange sensations in the legs
Without proper treatment, varicose veins can progress to cause serious problems like blood clots and ulcers, and in some extreme cases may even prove fatal.
All that said, not all varicose veins produce symptoms in the same way and not all varicose veins are visible to the naked eye. In some cases, we may need to use an ultrasound to make a proper diagnosis and know for certain if we need to begin varicose vein treatment from one of our centers in Glendale, Encino, or Beverly Hills
