What Are Lip Injections?

When you decide to get your lips enhanced, a cosmetic surgeon will inject a dermal filler into your lips to make them more plump and full. These dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid - a sugar that exists naturally in the body - and come in different variations. Some of these variations are Restylane, Juvederm, and Juvederm Volbella. These variations of dermal fillers provide patients with different results in both longevity and density, thus ensuring that each patient receives a treatment well-suited for their personal desires. To determine which formula is best for you, we always recommend scheduling a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon to discuss your desired results and working with him or her to create a treatment plan.

Dermal Filler Procedure

The lip injection procedure typically takes less than one hour. After cleaning the area of injection, a numbing cream will be applied and can take about 15-20 minutes to kick in. Instead of numbing cream, your doctor may inject you with lidocaine instead. Once the area is numb, it takes about 15-20 minutes to complete the injections. Patients are then typically able to leave shortly after completion of treatment.

Dermal Filler Upkeep & What to Expect

You will see lip volume increases immediately after injections. But, you may experience some bruising and swelling for a few days after the procedure, which is normal. We recommend that you avoid touching your lips for 24-48 hours after receiving injections so that the fillers are able to settle properly. You may notice small bumps under your lips and be tempted to touch them and try to smooth them out, but try not to do this! The bumps should smooth out within a week or so on their own. If the bumps remain under your lips after 2 weeks, schedule a follow-up appointment with your cosmetic doctor to have these removed.

The longevity of dermal lip fillers varies patient to patient, but we usually re-treat patients after 3-12 months. This varies based on the type of injections used, and the lifestyle of the patient. For example, patients who are more physically active tend to see their fillers dissolve faster because they experience increased blood flow. Your cosmetic doctor will help determine how long you can expect your lip enhancements to last.
